Indiana Green Invitational

Indiana Green Invitational is an annual exhibit and has gained the attention of artists throughout the Midwest by introducing a diverse body of work and artists to varying venues and areas in Wisconsin.  The exhibit is held in a different venue each year, and this year Rountree Gallery is delighted to host works that are significant today in our Midwest contemporary art landscape.

Platteville, Wisconsin, June 2023 — Rountree Gallery proudly hosts the 2023 Indiana Green Invitational – a curated exhibition of five artists featuring works by Pamela Callahan (Highland, WI), Carrie Johnson (Rockford, IL), Linda Marcus(Milwaukee, WI), Rachel Hausmann Schall (Mosinee, WI), and Mallory Shotwell (Grand Rapids, MI). Indiana Green is curated by Frank Juárez, Artdose Magazine.

Opening reception is Saturday, June 24 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. and the exhibit runs from June 24 through August 12, 2023, at Rountree Gallery 120 W. Main St., Platteville, WI.  Gallery hours are every Thursday and Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and every Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. or by appointment.

Indiana Green Invitational is an annual group exhibition featuring 2-D and 3-D works by artists living and working in Wisconsin. The first Indiana Green was curated by Frank Juárez in Sheboygan, Wisconsin (2010) to recognize artists that supported him as an artist. What was supposed to be a one-year exhibition gradually grew into an annual exhibition gaining the attention of artists in Wisconsin. Since 2017, Indiana Green Invitational has been traveling across the state of Wisconsin with a new roster of artists. To date, it has featured 90 artists.

Every year Indiana Green Invitational introduces a diverse body of work by artists working from such as but not limited to: paintings, mixed media, sculpture, printmaking, installation, textiles, glass, and photography. This exhibition features works that are significant today in Wisconsin’s contemporary art landscape.

In 2023, Indiana Green Invitational expands to include artists from Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, and Minnesota.

From This Point Forward

MIAD Gallery at The Ave provides a supportive space for Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design students, alumni, faculty, and staff to show and sell their work in the heart of downtown Milwaukee. The gallery will hold both exhibitions and a rotating inventory of artwork, crafted goods, and more.

From This Point Forward features MIAD alumni representing nearly five decades of creative learning.

The inspiration for the exhibition title is a tagline used by the Layton School of Art during the 1970s: “from this point forward.” Although the Layton School of Art ultimately closed, from it was born the Milwaukee School of the Arts and ultimately the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) – illustrating the tagline’s bold, optimistic and accurate prediction of the enduring commitment to fostering and nurturing creative careers. Several decades later, this passion and dedication to art and design education continues within the practices of the varied alumni who move through this space. Today, we are proud to present MIAD alumni in our inaugural exhibition at MIAD Gallery at The Ave, an historic new chapter in the college’s legacy.

Moments Like This

Woman Made Gallery (WMG) is pleased to present “Moments Like This,” a group exhibition juried by Jessica Bingham featuring the work of 42 women and non-binary artists exploring the need to pause, process what we have collectively gone through in the last two years, and move at the speed of humanity rather than the speed of production.

In her jurors’ statement, Jessica Bingham writes: “The women and non-binary artists in this exhibition are healers, caretakers, activists, collectors, and noticers—they shine a light on the moments that we often are too busy to cherish or learn from. The stories that inform the work in Moments Like This pierced my soul and made it abundantly clear that the slow movement has made significant waves in our fast-past society. It is also evident that the pandemic and fight for social justice in our country has influenced the work of every single artist in this exhibition. From having time to be present with oneself to illustrating the emotional weight we carry to the empowerment of our collective voices, these artists passionately and carefully ask us to pause and reflect with them. Some of these artists have been implementing slow living for many years, while others have recently rediscovered their self-worth through questioning ideas of “success”—all of which tap into the gravity of well-being. Through their vast practices, including time-based methods, quilting, painting, installation, collecting, and video, they challenge the norm of productivity, power, and presence.”

Terrain Biennial at Lease Agreement

Make Time Waste Time is a site-specific sculptural intervention created by artist Rachel Hausmann Schall. The project is a reflection on the necessity of time spent. It infers a dual meaning that pushes us to ponder how we fill the minutes in our days. It begs us to consider how we prioritize responsibilities and helps us realize the consequences of “wasting” or “making”

Spend it
Waste it
Wish it
Take it
Give it
Need it
Lose it
Make it
Keep it

Time

The Terrain Biennial is unlike any other art festival. It takes place on lawns, in front yards, on porches, beneath awnings, and in windows. Residents partner with artists to bring striking, contemporary artwork into their communities. The Terrain Biennial challenges the way art is often confined to institutional spaces and class-specific audiences. Building on Chicago’s rich tradition of apartment galleries and artist-run spaces, the Biennial brings contemporary art into the intimate terrain of the front yard, fostering dialogue between neighbors and providing access to new art for a wide range of people.

Lease Agreement is an artist-run and sometimes nomadic curatorial project by Adam Farcus. The gallery programming continues in the tradition of alternative art spaces by organizing conceptually rigorous, engaging work for exhibitions, screenings, performances, and art events. Lease Agreement has a physical gallery at 2306 21st Street, Lubbock, and also partners with galleries, organizations, businesses, and utilizes public spaces to bring contemporary art to viewers.

Body of Work

  • Brook Stevens Gallery, Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Through large-scale works by women artists, “Body of Work” engages the community in a conversation about the relationship between the body and artmaking. The exhibition, on view June 19 – September 7 with an Opening Reception Wednesday, June 19, 5 – 8 p.m., is a witness to women artists laboring to unchain themselves from patriarchal stereotypes. The artworks focus on the physicality of making large-scale works. The body is representational, conceptual or inherent in some work, but not apparent in other work. The exhibit is curated by Kate Schaffer and MIAD alumna Melissa Dorn.

“The exhibition creates spaces for community dialogue around issues of women’s work, their limits within a patriarchal society, and making the impossible possible,” said Schaffer.
